Am I in favor of the new financial overhaul? No.
The new financial overhaul places too much power in the hands of one man - the Secretary of the Treasury. It forms a new oversight council that consolidates power across numerous agencies and reaches into nearly every corner of the financial marketplace. It follows a bad precedence set in TARP where we are unwilling to let big banks fail from bad business decisions. Instead this overhaul gives the Federal Government the ability to dismantle any bank the Secretary of the Treasury and his council deem to be unstable and at-risk. This makes no sense and is contrary to free market principles.
Where are my property rights as a shareholder when this happens? What about my willingness to assume risk for greater financial returns? If a bank wants to specialize in loans to high-risk start-ups in order to stimulate the economy why would we enact financial reform to prevent this?
Crooked thinking - that's what this is. It limits the legal and ethical pursuit of profit and removes the natural consequences of failure that make free market economies thrive.
