The U.S. Constitution - something for all nations...

Many, many years ago, even shortly after the founding of this nation, George Washington recommended the U.S. Constitution to all nations not yet familiar with it.  He did this in his farewell address of 19 September 1796.

With so many nations in upheaval across the Middle East, instead of exporting weapons and armaments, we would do well to export the U.S. Constitution instead.  Let us give every citizen of Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, Bahrain and others a copy of this brilliant document.  If Democracy is what the people crave, then let us persuade them to embrace a Republic instead.  Let us give them the vision of a government that is by the people and for the people but protective against the populist uprisings that Democracies are famous for.  The Founding Fathers of this nation established a Republic exactly because they wanted this nation to endure and withstand the destructive swings of popular opinion so often found in Democracies.  Steadiness, stability and protection of God given rights are cornerstones of our Republic - exactly because it is a Republic.

James Madison explained it this way in the Federalist Papers:

"Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths..

A republic, by which I mean a government in which the scheme of representation takes place, opens a different prospect and promises the cure for which we are seeking."

Are we not seeking a cure for the turbulence, contention and violence we continually see in the Middle East?  Let us recommend to these and all nations, peoples and tribes that they embrace the principles, powers and limitations laid out in the U.,S. Constitution.

George Washington had it right on this one and we should follow his lead.

Couldn't agree with you more on this one, Ian. Mr. Washington, Mr. Madison and the other Founders were absolutely correct in their assessments and the creation of this democratic republic. High time we returned to those principles of personal liberties balanced with personal responsibility and rein in the reach of the Federal Government.

Glad to read you're considering a run in 2012. We need more people in D.C. that are beholden to the wisdom of our Constitution.
